Tie Kuan Yin thee wordt geassocieerd met de Chinese Boeddhistische Godin van Genade, Guanyin. Volgens een legende was er een aardige thee boer die zorgde voor de godin van de vervallen tempel in Anxi land in de provincie Fujian van China. Uit dankbaarheid  kwam ze in een droom naar hem toe en vertelde hem de locatie van een 'schat' in een grot achter haar tempel. Daar vond hij een theeplant die hij vervolgens kweekte en deelde de stekken met zijn buren die allemaal deze unieke thee begonnen te telen. De regio werd toen bekend voor de Iron Buddha thee, die nu een van de meest populaire oolong thee in China is.
